About this deal

Suddenly his marriage, career and freedom are all put to the test when he becomes the target of an obsessive technology entrepreneur who gets exactly what he wants and is very used to winning; in this instance, Joe’s partner of twelve-years, wife for the nine and mother of his four-year-old son, William. These are stories that entertained me, challenged me, thrilled me, and kept me on the edge of my seat; in this list you’ll find Gothic horror, Nordic Noir, psychological suspense, and much more; a wide array of crime fiction subgenres, but all excellent books that stood out from the pack for me in 2022. Thereafter, Joe can’t undo everything that has spiraled out of control since and boy is he in for a doozy, and so was I. Overall, this was fairly solid thriller but be prepared that you might get frustrated with the main character. THAT moment when you see or know something that you would kill not too and your heart and gut just drop.

If, however, you’re just in it for the entertainment value - and there’s absolutely no shame in that, I might add - LIES may deliver just enough of that shock value to make it worth your while. When Jo is driving home with son William and William spots his mothers car going into the carpark of a hotel Jo decides to follow her to see what she's up to. As I reflected on my year in books while writing this blog post, it felt nearly impossible to narrow down my picks. After all, why describe, in such detail, how Wills likes to play airport parking garage, lining up his cars by color again and again?William begins to have an asthma attack, and Joe makes a split second decision that will change his life—he leaves Ben where he is and rushes his son home.

For everything that frustrated me about him as a husband (seriously, Joe, she is in a hotel with another man in the middle of the work day! M. Logan is an unputdownable thriller in which each chapter changes the meaning of what came before, keeping the reader guessing until the jaw-dropping finale. The trivial decision that leads up to the fallout is a chance sighting of wife, Melissa’s car on a school run home, with young son, William, eager to share the news of his superstar certificate from show it to his mum. If you are the publisher or author and feel that they do not properly reflect the range of media opinion now available, send us a message with the mainstream reviews that you would like to see added. There’s just no rhyme or reason for the way LIES wraps up; try as I might, I can only find one very tiny clue placed earlier in the story that would in any way allude to this shocking finale. Lie’s is marred a little by several disappointing aspects, firstly the absolutely ludicrous and over the top police response. The book has already been praised as “riveting” (Megan Miranda) and “bingeworthy” (Caroline Kepnes), and it’s sure to be one of fall’s must-read crime novels.

If you loved the movie Ready or Not or Jessica Knoll’s psychological thriller Luckiest Girl Alive, you’ll love Catherine Steadman’s THE FAMILY GAME.

Not recommended for Luddite’s who loathe the way technology has overtaken the world and altered our communications. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. M. Logan just doesn’t quite make the cut; frankly, it doesn’t hold up against the numerous, expertly-plotted psychological thrillers that have released this year alone. Bloody, meta, occasionally self-deprecating, and always wickedly entertaining, CURSE OF THE REAPER draws inspiration from the world of slasher films to tell a delightfully devious tale of an actor, the silver screen villain to which he devoted his entire career, and the grip that villain might just have on him in the real world.
